This document describes the steps required to properly install the Windows XP 64-Bit Conexant soft modem (HSF) Generic Drivers, which accompany this document. Please understand that the Conexant modem drivers you will be installing are intended for basic modem operations and are generally not supported. 
It is important to ensure that this software is installed for modems using an HDA modem solution based on a Conexant Systems chipset. The plug and play information included in the setup files will not prevent the installation of this software on non-Conexant based products. If you need to identify your modem, please read the related section below.

I.   Identify your modem.
     Download "Check Chipset for correct modem information" as well as the List Modem Application from the modem support area of www.conexant.com.

	Check the chipset identification number. (Skip this step if you already know you are using a Conexant HDA modem.)
	i. Print this document or note this section.
	ii. Power down your personal computer.
	iii. Unplug the power cord to the system.
	iv. Open the system by removing the access panel.
	v. Remove the modem and read and note the device numbers for the modem.
	vi. Replace the modem and the case panel. When finished plug the system in and power up your computer.

     Compare the device numbers and the appearance to the information in the correct modem information document. 

     Use the List Modem Application to confirm that the modem has been identified by your system and is ready for software installation.

II.  Extracting the generic modem driver.

  1.  Download the Windows XP 64-Bit Conexant soft modem (HSF) Generic Driver from the website (www.conexant.com). 
  2.  Extract the modem driver files contained in the zip file onto your local drive (C:\).

**Note:  It is recommended that you take note of the exact location of the extracted files, as you will be required to use this information during the installation process.  
         On how to download the generic modem drivers from Conexant, please read the document "Instructions on How to Download Generic Drivers".

III.  Instructions for Windows XP 64-Bit.
  
i. Upgrading or installing the modem driver. (Recommended)

1. Disconnect from the Internet when ready to install the Conexant modem drivers. This will prevent the add new hardware wizard from installing drivers from Windows Update. 
2. Open the phone and modem control panel, select the modems tab, highlight modem in the list and click on the properties button.
3. Select the driver tab and click on the Update driver... button. 
4. If asked, "Can Windows connect to Windows Update to search for software?", select "No, not this time" and click the next button.  If not asked, just follow step #5.
5. Select the option to install from a list or specific location and click the next button. 
6. Select the option labeled "Don't search. I will choose the driver to install." Click on the next button. 
7. Click on the Have Disk button and browse to the folder where the modem driver is located, then select the file named GENHDA6.inf. The modem name will be listed, click next to proceed with the installation.
8. The Windows XP 64-Bit operating system will prompt you with a software installation alert. This dialog explains how the software you are attempting to install has not passed Windows Logo testing. To install drivers click on "Continue Anyway" when prompted. This prompt may occur more then once. Select the option to continue anyway in all cases. 
9. Click on "Finish" as directed and close all of the control panels opened for this installation. The modem may be ready to use, depending on the state of the system when the installation process began. Reboot the system when directed by Windows XP 64-Bit.

ii. Upgrading the modem driver with the Conexant modem drivers using Setup64.exe.

1. Disconnect from the Internet when ready to install Conexant modem drivers. This will prevent the add new hardware wizard from installing drivers from Windows Update.
2. Go to the folder where the modem driver is located, C:\HSFhda_WinXP64, and double click on Setup64.exe.
3. By clicking on the Setup64.exe, you will be uninstalling the current modem driver, if installed, and installing the Conexant soft modem (HSF) generic modem driver that was downloaded from the Conexant website.
4. The Windows XP 64-Bit operating system will prompt you with a software installation alert. This dialog explains how the software you are attempting to install has not passed Windows Logo testing. To install drivers click on "Continue Anyway" when prompted. This prompt may occur more then once. Select the option to continue anyway in all cases.  
5. The add new hardware wizard will continue to run, installing the Conexant modem drivers. When prompted, selected the option to Install the software automatically (Recommended) and click "Next" to continue.
6. Click on "Finish" as directed. The modem may be ready to use, depending on the state of the system when the installation process began. Reboot the system when directed by Windows XP 64-Bit.
